1815 Mexico declared war with United States. 1859 Battle of Magenta; Austrians defeated by French. 1861 Wreck of mail steamer Canadian on iceboTg in Straits of Belleiele; thirtyfive lives lost. 1863 Defeat of Maoris at Katikara., Tataraimaka, block, near New Plymouth, by British troops. 1875 S.S. Yicksburg, Quebec to Liverpool, foundered; forty lives lost. 1878 Anglo-Turkish Convention signed at Constantinople. TO-DAY'S NEWS. Conflicting stories of incidents in connection with the St Lawrence disaster are published. (Page 7.) Final official figures show that 1021 lives were lost by the wreck of the Empress of Ireland, and that 132 persons were saved. (Pago 7.)
