REPRESENTATIVE G AMES. Sydenham Park presented a busy appearance yesterday morning, when several hundred hockey players met to compete in the annual Iwkey tournament, and the representative, fixtures with South Canterbury and Ashburi/n The tournament games for the lower grades were commenced shortly after 9.30, and from then on the fun was fast and furious. . The tournament games were capably managed by Mr J. Burgess. 80., the representative games resulted in hollow wins for Canterbury. Ashburton were accounted for by a round dozen goals and South Canterbury were beaten by eight goals to one. CANTERBURY v. SOUTH CANTERBURY. The teams were:— Canterbury ' {Red and Black) —Goalkeeper, C. Bellamy; backs, P. Martin and P. Berry; halves, N. Goldsbury, R. Parton and F. Sepie; forwards, W. Patrick, E. Hulbert (captain), If. Throp, W. Grammar and G. Holland. iSuuob Canteroury (blue) —Goal-keep-er, Turner; backs, Rix and Gabites; halves, Clark, J. Anderson (captain) and J. Wallace; forwards, Edwards, R. Waugh, F. Kennard, L. Davis and L. Hudson.

Canterbury quickly got to work and from a right wing attack Patrick centred and Throp netted after two minutes' play. After some central play on Canterbury's right the Reds, again invaded, but Patrick was stopped by Rix. The latter's clearing stroke was returned by Parton. Throp shot, but Turner saved the ball, skying over the fence off the south goal. Soutb's right wing got going with a nice interchange of passing between Hudson, Davis and Kennard. At Canterbury's twenty-five Martin gavo sticks, but the free hit wis of little uso to South. Parton set his whole forward line going, and some clever work between Patrick, Hulbert and Throp was ended by the last-named shooting. The ball glanced off Gabites, a corner resulting. "Wallace hit out at the twenty-five. Senie prevented Kennard and Waugh getting away, and the U.R.O. half sent ft hard pass to Holland, who missed, the half going out at Soutb's corner. Canterbury was penalised for off-side play, but tho smart fielding of Parton sustained the attack. J. Anderson stopped a strong onslaught on Smith's circle and passed to Edwards, who. with Waugh transferred play to tho Bed's quarter line, from where Parton intercepted and hit out at half-way. What promised to be a successful rush by Soutb's front rank was spoilt by Hudson being off-side in Canterbury's circle. Sepio played to Holland, whose knock-on temporarily stcpned Canterbury's rush. Nice fielding by Barry re-started the Reds. Holland, Grammar, Throp and Hulbert all having a turn. The last-named scored with a clean shot. Canterbury 2, South Canterbury o*.'

Martin was conspicuous, and a "nice drive to Patrick saw the Sydenham right-winger dash into the circle. Rix stopped the shot and hit out. The South forwards set up a persistent attack, Howson, Davis, Waugh and Kennard all passing well. Hudson secured in the circle, but shot over the net. South again invaded, assisted by J. Anderson, who was playing cleverly at centre-half. Parton temporarily stopped the rush, but Kennard returned. He in turn was stopped by Berry. The Sydenham back drove well up the field and set Grammar and Holland going. A hard centre by the latter went over- From the twenty-five bully Wallace sent play to half-way and out. Davis, Kennard and "Waugh ran to the Reds' circle, but Parton intercepted and hit out. Throp. Hulbert and Patrick went as far as South's twenty-five, where Gabites disputed possession and drove to Sepie. Anderson beat Goldsbury, but Berry in turn took the' ball from tho South centre-half, A long drive resulted in play being transferred to South's end, where it remained for a time, only strenuous defenco keeping the Reds out. Davis broke away on his own, but Berry returned from half-way to South's twenty-five. A pass from Anderson to Hudson, who beat Goldsbury, sent play well into Canterbury's end. ' Martin relieved, and a hot attack by the Reds followed. Holland had a shot, which was well stopped by Turner. Fine defence kept Canterbury's forwards from scoring. Throp shot, but Turner returned hard. The Sydenham centre returned the ball with interest and netted successfully.

Canterbury 3, South Canterbury 0. Canterbury's right wing attacked from tho bully, but Clark cleverly beat Patrick, and" Edwards took play past mid-field. A nice run by the Red forwards to South Canterbury's circle saw Turner kick to the quarter flag. Returning, Hulbert missed from a difficult angle. Patrick obstructed, but the

On resuming an interchange of hitting between tho opposing halves took some time. Davis eventually recoived a pass from Wallace. Berry cut in, sending the ball out near the middle flag. A faulty roll in by Sepio and a long drive to South's quarter saw Rix return bard to past, the centre and out. Hulbert recoived a pass from Parton and sent it on to Patrick, but Rix hit out. Hard hitting by Sepie ended in a twenty-five. South trot well away, and a fine run by Edwards, who beat Martin, looked promis'ng. Parton intercepted and sent play to his left wing, where Grammar hit hard across to Patrick onlv to find the right winger offside. The Reds returned, and through Goldsbury's centre Holland scored. Ashburton then made a 6hort journey into the Reds' territory, but tho dofenco proved equal to the occasion. The Reds forwards wero set going by Pascoe from a penalty corner for sticks. FIVE-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT. The annual five-a-side tournament organised by the Canterbury Hockey Association, was held yesterday at Sydenham Park, when seventy-six teams competed in the various grades as against oighty-six in the tournament of last year. Conditions were none too good for hockey, a thick fog enveloping the grounds in the morning, and tho rain j in the afternoon making the playing | field very slippery. Despite the in- j clemency of the weather, however, some very even and exciting games were played. In the tournament no fewer than seventy-four games took place. In tho Senior Grade' Sydenham A defeated Cambridge in tho final round, thus winning the cup presented by the defunct Drapers' Club, while Sydenham B won the Second Grade from East Belt. Akaroa secured first place in the Third Grade, with Selwyn B as run-ners-up. Technical College A won the Fourth Grade, and Christchurch B the Fifth Grade.
