BROWN SHIELD GAME. CANTERBURY v. WESTLAND. VISITORS DEFEATED. Played in a steady rain driven by a strong cold sou -wesfcor the first Brown Shield match of the season was not the success that had been hoped. The attendance at Richmond Park was meagre, and tho ground was too slippery to make any play sure. Westland was ail unknown quantity as a team, but it was anticipated that the eleven would give a good account of themselves, especially in defence. Canterbury had a team of seasoned players with the exception of Reid on the left wing, tried for the first time. Though the "conditions were against accurate play the game was interesting right through the first spell, but tin- second spell ended abruptly. The visitor.-, showed considerable cleverness .and combination, but their short parsing was not .suited to the heavy ball, and the forward line was inclined to pause with tho ball too long. Their play suggested that on a dry ground they would ba a much stronger team. Ihe halves were also handicapped by the use of short passing, but the two backs played powerlul games. Morton in foal was also responsible tor a fine exhibition. Iteid, for Canterbury, was a dismal failure, and M'Darlane was not as sound as usual. With the game slowed down a trifle Fnllerton- at contro-half was a tower of strength in turning defence into attack, and Clay tho right half played a fine, strong game. Norman, who was not well, was not as brilliant as usual, but Bij-B-ett and Grant showed good all through and shot well. The team:- were as follow: Canterbury.—Goal, Bennett: backs. Baker and M' Far lane; halves, Clay, Fnllerton and Baxter; forwards. Ward, Bissett, Norman, Grant and Reid. Westland.— Goal, Morton; backs, Wallace and Nicholl; halves, Cromptou, Ross and Reid; forwards, Meehren, Johnston, Shearer, J. Anderson and Sneddon. Linesmen, Messrs A. D. Ramsay and S. Williams. Referee, Mr T. Dansey, Otaao. , Wo.stland won the toss and elected to piav witli th'J wind behind them. Norman was late in coming on tin li Id and with Canterbury one man short tho visitors pros ed the Shield holders hard Rosa set his right wing going several times ami the attacks down tho centre were quick and sudden. Clay and Fnllerton relieved the .•situation and with the arrival of Norman, Bissstt was able to do more. Reid on tho Canterbury left wing was o-h-en several chances but the Westfand backs held out. Finally Reid e<>;jtrod nicolv from a good position and Norman headed to Ward. Ihe outside right put in a stinging shot, but .Morton saved bnlliaullv.
