FOOTBALL.

SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT. To-day at Lancaster Park, the Canterbury Rugby Football Union's annual scven-a-sido tournament will take place. Forty-nine teams will compote, and itis anticipated that, with the leading teams in tho Senior championship and 1 tho principal players from other clubs on the field, the competition will bo I" strenuous throughout. For the convenience of both patrons and players, tho Union has arranged for the provision of luncheon from 11.30 a.m. until 2 p.m. ! Messrs H. Pannell and Co. have i presented a pair of boots to bo awarded to the player who makes tho bost showing on the day The spoils played by each team will bo of five minutes, and tho team that compels a force, where, no other scoro is registered, will bo declared winner. SOUTH ISLAND TEAM. The Canterbury Rugby Union's candidates for the South Island team have been pretty well decided upon by the j selector, Mr S- F. ASHBURTON RUGBY SUB-UNION. The weekly meeting of the Ashburton County Rugby Sub-Union was held on Monday evening, when Mr W. F. Watters presided. The South Canterbury Rugby Union wrote stating that A. Lister's name was on the disqualified list, and on his application it was decided to ask tho South Canterbury Union to take necessary steps to have the disqualification "removed if deemed advisable. The Canterbury Centre wrote that as the Methven and Springburn playing teams had agreed to the change of referees ' the game should be awarded to Methven. Tho Rakaia delegate was instructed to arrange a suitable date to play the match Rakaia versus Methven owing to Rakaia taking part in tho Christchurch seven-a-sido tournament on the date sot down for playing.

Owing to a mistake in the date tho Rakaia Club was requested to write to the Springburn Club with a view to playing the third grade match. The draw committee was requested to recommend a date towards the end of July for holding the seven-a-sido tournament. Tho secretary was instructed to write to the Malvern Union rearranging a date for a eenior representative match.

ELLESMERE RUGBY SUB-UNION. A meeting cf the Ellesmero Rugby Sub-Union was held at Leeston on Friday last, Dr Withers (president) presiding. The secretary reported having written to tho Leeston and Duni sandel Clubs regarding applications i made for reinstatement, and stated i that with tho exception of a verbal statement from the secretary of the Leeston Club to tho effect that the players for whom his club had applied i for reinstatement wero not competent jto play as seniors, he had not rei ceived any reply. Tho Union did not 1 approve of tho action of the clubs in not replying to the request for the reasons supporting their application. It was decided, however, that tho apI plications should be granted. It was ; decided to deposit the Union's funds in the savings bank, and Mr R. T. BROWN SHIELD CONTEST. To-day at Richmond Park the first challenge match of the year will be played, when Westland will try conclusions with Canterbury (holders). Tho West Coast team includes several first-class men. The Canterbury team has been chosen with great difficulty, thero being so many excellent exponents of the game available. The Canterbury Association has never put a stronger line of forwards in tho field, and the same remark applies to the half-backs. The team to don the red-and-black jerseys is as follows: Goal, Bennett; backs, Baler, U'Farlane; halves, Baxter, Fuuerton and Clay; forwards, Ward, Bissett, Norman, Grant and lieid. The kick-off takes place at 2.45.
