A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that the death occurred on the s.s. Rotorua, from London, of Mr J. Steel, a second-class passenger, aged sixty-three. He was a native of Ayrshire, Scotland, and was accompanied by his wife and daughter. He intended settling in the dominion.

The Dunedin correspondent of the “ Lyttelton Times ” states that Mr Janies Arthur, of Messrs J. and J. Arthur, of Dunedin, died in London last week. Mr Arthur, accompanied by his wife and youngest child, went to England to receive medical advice in regard to a complaint from which ho was suffering, and news reached Dunedin a week ago that the operation was successful, but a later message recorded the patient’s death.

Among the passengers who arrived at Wellington from London by the steamer Rotorua yesterday, states a Press Association telegram, were Captain C. R. MacDonald, of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, and Captain Gibbon, of tlio Royal Irish Fusiliers, both of whom were accompanied by their wives and families. Captain MacDonajd will succeed Lieutenant-Colonel Braithwaite (who has been appointed chief of the general staff in succession to Colonel Heard) ns general staff officer for the Auckland military district. Captain Gibbon will replace Lieutenant-Colonel Cochrane (who has gone to England) as director of military operations.

Last week Professor W. M. Davis, of Harvard University, accompanied by Mr R. Speight, curator of Canterbury Museum, visited several places of interest in Christchurch.
