Allen, Minister of Finance, will arrive in Christchurch tomorrow morning from Wellington and will accompany Mr Massey on his trip to Southland. Mr James Hastie, son of Mr Robert Hastie, of Cashmere, has joined the Aparima as an indentured cadet. Ihe steamer left Lyttelton last week on a voyage to Calcutta. Dr Eleanor S. Baker, who is carrying out the medical examination of children in the public schools of Canterbii,ry, arrivea in Ohristchurch on Saturday from tho West Coast. The Hon W. F. Massey will leave Wellington by this evening’s ferry boat for Lyttelton. He will go south by the first ‘express to-morrow and will address a meeting at Gore in the evening. Mr J. W. H. Scotland, the aviator, who is at present in Christchurch, expects that his new biplane, which he has ordered from Home, will reach New Zealand in July. Ho will then continue his flying exhibitions. At a meeting held on Saturday, the executive of the North Canterbury Educational Institute nominated Mr J. Caughlev, M.A.; Headmaster of the West Christchurch District High School, as teachers’ representative on the Canterbury College Board of Governors. Their Excellencies the Earl and Countess of Liverpool left Wellington on Friday night for Rarotonga, states a Press Association message. There they will join Dr Pomare and the party on the Tutanekai, for a cruise among the islands, returning to Wellington about June 18. Miss May Jackson, daughter of Sergeant Jackson, in charge of the Sydenham police, station, on Friday was presented on tho oocasion of her approaching marriage with a silver tea .and coffee service and silver tray by her fellow-employees and tho directors of Beaths, Ltd. Miss Jackson has been in the firm’s servico for seven years. The President of the North Island Grand Lodge, U.A.0.D., Brother A. Thompson, and the Grand Secretary, Brother J. M. Grant, arrived m Christchurch from Wellington yesterday. In company with Brother J. N. Neate, President of the Canterbury Lodge, they will proceed to Dunedin by the first express to-day, where a conference will be held with representatives of the Otago and Southland and West Coast Grand Lodges, with the'object of forming one Grand Lodge for New Zealand. \

In his younger days Mr Burnes, Wellington manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, who died suddenly on Tuesday, was a successful athlete, and was well known in Dunedin and Christchurch, as well as in Wellington. He was the son of Mr Adam Burnes, who in 1857 opened the Oriental Banking Corporation in Wellington, and who was afterwards the first general manager and inspector of the National Bank of New Zealand. Mr J. H. N. A. Burnes was born in Melbourne, and had been in the service of the New Zealand Shipping Company for thirty-six years. He was fifty-three years of age. Ho joined the Wellington office as a youth, and was afterwards stationed for several years at Dunedin. He then became chief clerk in the company’s head office at Ohristchurch, and some sixteen years ago was promoted to the position of manager in Wellington. Three years ago ho took a trip to England, but after his return he spent six months in a private hospital. He had been ill ever since, and his death ay as not unexpected, as the result of heart trouble. The late Mr Burnes is survived by his widoAv and a son and daughter. Miss Madge Burnes is on a visit to England, and the son, Mr Allan Burnes, who is on a sheep station in the North Island, is spending a holiday in New South Wales. His sister is Mrs H. H. Loughnan, of Christchurch, and his brothers aro Messrs Adam Burnes (Government Life Insurance Department, Wellington), Alexander P. Burnes (Government Life Insurance Department, Nelson), Ernest L. Burnes (Melbourne, and formerly of the A.M.P. Society, ’Wellington), .George Burnes (district manager of the A.M.P. Society, Invercargill) and Douglas Burnes (who is residing in Canada).
