DEFENCE.

SIR lAN HAMILTON AT AUCKLAND. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 14. An inspection of the harbour defences of Auckland was made to-day by General Sir lan Hamilton, accompanied by the Minister of Defence and General Godley. This morning the General visited the three forts, and the inspection was most thorough. Firing .from:.-the heavy guns was carried out by Territorials and Permanent Artillerymen, and-Tood work was done. The General did not address the forces except at Fort Cautley, where he said that as far as he could judge the shooting was good. In the afternoon tho General visited the Veterans' Home and the Colonial Ammunition Company's works. To-night he left for Napier.
