THE LATE MR GEORGE LAURENSON.

TO TUB EDITOR. Sir.- -Being an old l.yttcltoniau, i fori it most necessary that someone should answer the letter written by •'A.J.S." regarding the lato Mr George Lauren'son. As regards our appreciating the efforts of our late member, I may say that every one of us—- [ tak'o the liberty of speaking for my fellows as well as myself—realise the earnestness of Mr Lau reason's life and the greatness of his work, and I feel greatly mortified to note that your correspondent hints that wo are -unmindful of the sacrifices ho made. The question of a suitable memorial has lons been in my mind, and .1 agree with "A.J.S." that the suggestion to name our new suburb " Laurenson" is a splendid idea. I therefore take this opportunity of impressing upon the Council the hope that they will do as suggested. I 'am sure their action would meet with the approval of every citizen, of our town.—l am, etc., A LYTTELTON PATRIOT. Lyttelton, March 24. TO THE XSIXOS. Sir.—May I point out to the Borough Council of Lyttelton that it would not cost them pounds, shillings and pence to pay the small tribute to the late Mr Laurenson, as has been suggested by several writers to your paper, namely, to call the Diamond Harbour settlement after him. I was at the meeting of Lyttelton residents that was called to put the facts of the trans-harbour scheme before them. 1 am 6uro everyone will admit, who happened to be there, that the meeting was entirely antagonistic to the scheme until tile late Mr Laurenson commenced speaking, and. of course, as was always the case, ho converted everyone to his way of thinking. The borough councillors themselves know they have no one else to thank for acquiring that beautiful estate but their late member, and surely they are big enough in mind to do • this popular act. Surely tho Lyttelton people are not going to lot this opportunity pass to pay honour to the man who so loyally served ami died for them. 1 inn. etc.. CONTEMPTUOUS. Opawa, March 2L
