MAWSON’S RETURN.

WORK OF THE EXPEDITION. MUCH SCIENTIFIC MATERIAL. AUSTRALIA’S CLAIM TO THE NEW LAND. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. MELBOURNE, March 6. Dr Mawson, speaking at- a welcome to the members of the expedition, said that they had brought several tons of rock and mineral specimens, three or four hundred bird skins, and a number of mammals of the seal type. They had obtained indications of a large area of coal, but at present lie could not estimate the commercial value of the new lands. The now land might have much value and it was only right that Australia should have it, as Australian and British expeditions had accomplished practically all tho work done there. He stated that he had made exclusive arrangements with London papers for tho main narrative. He, however,, had supplied certain news to Australian papers, and as a result his whole contract with London had been cancelled. INTERESTING ISLANDS. SYDNEY, March 6. Mr Frank Hurley, of MaWson’s expedition, gives an interesting description of the Mackellar Islands group, a few miles to the north of Mawson’s main base. The place was a great breeding ground for seals, rare gulls, petrels and penguins. He estimated that 150,000 Adelie Land penguins were breeding on the ground at the time of bis visit.
