MADDISON TKOPHY TOURNAMENT. SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP OP CENTRE. Tho annual contest for the Maddison trophy, in which the singles champions of all clubs affiliated with the Christchurch Centre of the Dominion Bowling Association are eligible to compote, was held at the Christchurch Bowling Club’s green yesterday, starting at noon. The weather was beautifully fine for tho opening games, tho green was in first-class condition, and there was no wind. Play was started punctually, and all save a fe* of tho smaller country clubs were represented. The standard of play generally speaking was high, and some interesting contests were witnessed. The tournament was conducted on the “ sudden death” principle, each competitor dropping out of the ptay as soon as he was defeated. The final game, between Torrance (Christchurch) and Jack (Sydenham) was interrupted at the tenth head -by a heavy thundershower, which put a stop to play for the day. The scores at that stage were seven all. The remaining heads of tho final will be played on a date to be fixed by the Centre executive. Following are details of the play:— First Round. R. J. CHRISTCHURCH CLUB. The semi-final of the Champion Doublos was - played on Wednesday, when Dr Pairman nncl Dr Sandstein beat G. Lewis and T. Bunting by 2G to 8. and AT. Helliwell and A. S. Gurney bent J. Caugliley and R. Davies by 27 to 8. The winners will play the final to-day. CANTERBURY CLUB. The finals for the champion doubles competition of the Canterbury Club were played yesterday, and resulted in Lowry and Brown defeating Ronayne and English and Alexander and White in the respective sections. This pair will represent the Canterbury Club in the Centra’s doubles championship, to be played on the St Albans green to-morrow. EDGEWARE v. ST ALBANS.
