Lieutenant Filchner asserts that he transferred to Lieutenant Ivoenig the right to carry on the uncompleted programme of 1 the Filchner expedition, which entitled Koenig to priority over Shackleton.

DISCOVERIES IN ADELIE LAND SYDNEY, March 4.

Dr M’Lean, bacteriologist, and Mr Frank Hurley, photographer, of the Mawson expedition, have returned to Sydney. Dr M’Lean added few details to what is already known. Ho said that the story was a long one, not for him to tell. When Mawson’s book of famp came out they would read the whole thing.

Amongst other important discoveries were the nests of Antarctic petrols, •which had never before been found, and six Ross seals of a very rare species. While they were dredging many rare and new specimens were obtained.

DR MAWSON’S FINANCES. (Received March 5, 10.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 5

Professor • Masson said that £IO,OOO would solve all the financial problems in connection with the Mawson expedition. Despite this need the Commonwealth’s grant of £SOOO had helped to smooth the financial difficulties. It was expected to realise large sums by the sale of pictures as well as Dr Mawson’s book and so far there was no occasion to be otherwise than cheerful on the question of money.

MAWSON’S MARRIAGE ANNOUNCED. ADELAIDE, March 5l The Aurora will return to Hobart to await orders. Dr Mawson will shortly visit England in connection with his expedition. His coming marriage with Miss Delparit, daughter of the general manager of the Broken Hill Proprietary, is announced. SHACKLETON EXPEDITION. BRITISH GOVERNMENT’S GRANT. LONDON, March 4. The Government will grant Sir Ernest Shackleton £SOOO in 1914 and £SOOO in 1915 towards the cost of his Antarctic expedition.
