COMPETITIONS AT AUCKLAND. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, March 4.

Tha swimming gala which is being held under the auspices of the Auckland Centre cf f the New Zealand Swimming Association, and which is rendered notable by the presence of half a dozen Australian crack swimmers, including the champion, Harold Hardwiok, and Miss Fanny Durack, opened last night. Miss Durack missed a place in her heat of the LadW S6yds Dash by a bare touch, after giving away lOsec to the young lady who beat her. . ‘ _ The meeting of Champion, the New Zealand crack, and Harold Hardwick, the Aus-' tralian champion, in the 220yds Handicap, excited chief interest. Both, men Were in the first heat, Champion having a start of 4sec. The New Zealander trudged Away with a quick stroke right from the jump, whereas Hardwick did. the first hundred yards with a crawl stroke, which, however, brought him to Champion's ( heel, whereon he changed to a long clean ‘ steady trodlge. Though he wae kicking only two to Champion's three, he forged up inch by inch, drawing level at 200 yards. There was just a touoh in Hardwick's favour at the last turn, which he increased to a foot- at the winning rope. , In the final■ Champion, did not compete and Hardwick was just beaten by.C. Sinton, who had lOsec start. ''

The weekly competitions, of the North Canterbury Club were continued last evening, when the following events were decided: — Bbys’ Race, 2oyds (Mr Heine’s trophies)-' First heat: IV. Johnston, lOsec, 1; H. Kinley, scr, 2. Time—26 S-seec. Second heat:: V. Pringle, 14seo, 1; C. 'Wills, 20sec, % Time—2a l-sseo. Final: C. Wills, 20sec, 1;, V. Pringle, 14sec, 2; W. Johnston, lOsec, 3. Time —36 3-ssec. There were eight entries. ’ 25yds Handicap—First heat: H. Truscott, lseo, 1; F. Lyford, 2sec, 2. Time—ls 1-5 sec. Second heat: T. Fraser, lcec, .1-; R. Mellasch, scr, 2. Time—lssec. Final: F. . Byford, 2sec, 1; R. Mallasch, scr, and H. Truscott lsec, equaL 2. ..In the swim-off Truscott defeated Mallasch. There wera seven entries. _ Boys’ Springboard Dive—H. Kinley 1, C. Wills 2, C. Shilton 8. There were six antries. LINWOOD CLUB. The heats of the 100yds raoe in connection with the Linwood Amateur Swimming Club were swum off last evening. Following are the results:— First heat: A. J. Flanagan 1, B. Coulter 2. Second heat: R. T. Coulter 1, C. Johnston 2, O. Davison S. Third heat: H. R. Matthews and D. F. Coulter (dead heat) 1. E. Pulley, H. J. Bowlker and A. Y. Whitta also started. The final will bo swum off on the day of the carnival. CHRISTCHURCH LADIES’ CLUB. Tho following are tho results of the races swum at the Tepid Baths by members ,of v the Chris Sohurch Ladies’ Amateur Swimming and Life-saving Club: — 66 2-Byds Back and Breast Stroke—Mrs Johnston 1, Miss Fabian 2. . , 60 2-3yds Life-saving Handicap—Miss D. Brandon and Miss Fabian 1, Mrs Buchanan and Mrs Johnston 2. TEMUKA CLUB. In the Coronation Baths, Temuka, on Tuesday, the Temuka Swimming Club swum off two handicap races. The results wera as follows: — Men's 50yds Race—Whitehead, 18seo, I; Andrews, 6sec, 2; Squires, 4sec, 3. Twelve competed. Ladies’ 25yds Race—Miss N. Collier, 4eec, 1; Miss P. Parke, 4eec, 2; Miss L. Bums, ssec, 8. Six competed. 1 A meeting of the olub committee was held on Tuesday evening, and it was resolved to. give every possible assistance to the Milford Lagoon Recreation Association in carrying out sports at the annual picnio on March 17. Officials wera appointed for tha annual carnival, and the secretary was instructed to arrange a ladies’ committee for , refreshments for visiting competitors.
