DESPERATE PRISONERS.
ASSAULT ON A WARDER. [Per Press Association*.] AUCKLAND, December 23. Warder Anderson, storekeeper at Mount Eden Gaol, was assaulted by two prisoners this morning, and was seriously wounded in several places on tho head with an iron bar. Particulars or tho assault aro not yet available. It is understood, however, that one of tho prisoners concerned is a man who was recently transferred to Mount Eden Gaol from luvercargill Reformatory Prison under sentence for assaulting a warder at the southern prison. The motive is believed to have been a desire to obtain 6omo keys which the warder carried, and which the prisoners thought would open tho way to escape. Tho two prisoners will probably oouie up at the Police Court to-morrow.
