PRIZE DISTRIBUTIONS.

ELMWOOD SCHOOL. ' The annual presentation of prices in connection with the Elmwood School took place Inst night in the Rugby Street schoolroom. Tho chairman of tho School Committee, Mr R. St. C. Mackenzie presided, and with him on the platform was Mr L. M. Isitt, M.P. There was a large attendance of children, their parents and friends, for the interest taken in the school is of a very real character. Tho proceedings wero of a very homely and happy nature. The chairman said that in order to promote a spirit of chivalry among the boys ho tiad offered to present; a gold medal to bo awarded to the boy who, in the opinion of his schoolmates, had acted chivalrously and courteously to all during the year. There bad been three ballots, and he had pleasure in announcing that Master Hector Sinclair had been placed first with .J votes, Master Nelson Waller second with 64 votes, and Master Willie Donnelly third with 38 votes. In addition to tho medal an honours list had been placed in tho school, and on it each year would be placed the name of the dux of the school and the winner of tho medal for chivalry. Mr Isitt had kindly presented special prizes for tho boys placed scond and third, and in addition had consented to present the medal. Parents had been very generous in presenting prizes, and Mr \\. Fleming had presented a gold modal to the dux of tho school, M. Burns. Mr L. M. Isitt, M.P., after presenting the medal to tho wjnner, addressed the scholars on tho subject of chivalry Th idea of such a prize, ho said, was a capital thing. In these days r.heie was an idea that chivalry was inseparably connected with fighting. That was a relic of the old dark ages. Courage and chivalry were not found only on the field of battle. True, chivalry was there, but chivalrous a'-ts could be done each day—in tiie home, in the school, in the playground, iu the 'street. Let them be truthful, honourable, brave and considerate. They might never win a medal, but they would have the spirit, and men would honour them for it. He urged the girls to study their mothers, for all day and every day' the mothers were doing chivalrous acts, doing something for those they loved, some little seli-sacrificing acts. Thy must keep up the standard o ftheir mothers and help all brothers and . sisters to keep alive in ths age the spirit of true chivalry; ' • Before presenting the prizes the chairman dealt with tho work of the year. The school, he said, had been seriously handicapped through want of proper accommodation. The pupils of Standard 111. had had to occupy a tent, and that was not at all satisfac-. tory. The committee had done everything it possibly could to secure additional accommodation, both ,of buiidingß and playing ground, and if success did not crown its efforts in the near future the committee would ask the parents to meet and discuss the matter thoroughly. Every effort would be made to maintain the high standard the school had reached under Mr Sinclair's able guidance. • During the presentation of the prizes the winners of recitation prizes in two or three classes gave their recitations in a very clever manner. At the conclusion of the prize-giving the chairman, on behalf of the boys of Standard VI., presented the headmaster, Mr J. R. Sinclair, with a handsome case of military brushes, and in so doing paid a compliment to that gentleman's services as head of Elmwood School. Mr Sinclair briefly returned thanks. ...

On the motion of the chairman a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the teaching staff for their very valuable services, with special mention for Miss Smith, the teacher in charge of the infant classes. Mr Sinclair returned thanks, and spoke in appreciative terms .of the splendid Buppprt accorded the staff by tho School Committee and the parents of tho children. , The meeting broke up with cheers for the headmaster and tho committee. When the meeting had dispersed, the girls of Standard -VI.. waited on the headmaster, and their,.number, on behalf of the class; presented him with a beautifully-bdund book, which the recipient acknowledged.
