NATIONAL SCHOOLS DEFENCE LEAGUE.

In accordance with arrangements j made some weeks ago, prior to the r Prime Minister’s reply to the deputation which recently waited upon him, the Canterbury Branch of -the New Zealand National Schools’ Defence League held a meeting on Friday in - the Tai Tapu Hall. Tho League’s representatives wero the Rev I. Sar- „ ginson and Messrs J- Caughley. E. U. * Just and A. C. Maxwell. Mr R. Macartney, chairman of the Tai Tapu School Committee, presided. Ad- ■' dresses were given by the ReV I. Sarginson and by Messrs J. Caughley, ~ and E. U. Just. • ‘ The speakers were accorded an at- 1 tentive hearing. Mr F. Hubbard spoke j strongly against tho proposals of the ’■* Bible in Schools League and moved * the following motion “ That while * recognising tho value of the Bible and.,? of religion, this meeting Is opposed to J tho policy of the Bible in Schools * League.” In seconding the motion, the Rev H. . Ranston also expressed his entire disapproval of the proposals of the Bible \ in Schools League. The motion was carried unanimously. In moving a hearty vote of thanks', to the speakers, Mr R, Macartney said that he stood firmly for the present > free, compulsory and secular system of education.
