CHESTERFIELD BY-ELECTION. LABOUR PARTY CRITICISED. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. LONDON, August 21. Mr W. E. Harvey, Labour M.P. for the North-east Division of Derbyshire, speaking at Chesterfield, criticised the Labour Party’s action. He declared that he refused to.livo longer in such an atmosphere and refused the party’s dictation. In the lobby he would vote with the party, but it was not so independent as it pretended to bo. A LIBERAL WIN. Tho by-election for the Chesterfield division of Derbyshire, rendered necessary in consequonce of the death of Mr James Haslam (Labour), resulted as follows: Mr Kenvon (Liberal) . . . 7725 Mr E. Cnristio (Conservative) • 5539 Mr Scurr (Socialist) . . . 683 (At the previous general election, held in December, 1910, the result was: J. Haslam (Labour) 7283, G. W. Radford (Conservative) 5055. The new member has been variously described as a Liberal and a Labour candidate, and strong exception was taken to his candidature by a section of the Labour Party on the ground that ho was not sufficiently progressive and because he was more of a Liberal than a Labour representative.) HOME RULE. Home Rule was hardly mentioned in the Chesterfield election campaign. The chief interest was in the split between tho Liberals and Labour.
