CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, August 22. , (Before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.) Drunkenness. —James Hepburn, a second offender for drunkenness, was fined 10s, in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment.—William Ckoat (Mr Twyneham) was charged with being drunk while in charge of a horse and dart.. Counsel said that the affair had already cost accused £2B in making good the damage caused. He was convicted and discharged.—Henry Day, for drunkenness, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, it being understood that he would not be called upon provided he remained in tlio Salvation Army Homo for six months. Cyclists in Error. —For cycling on footpaths Charles Burrell was convicted and discharged, Matthew Barnes was fined 7s and costs, Alfred Sinclair os and costs, Henry M’Lean 7s and costs. —Allister Ewen M’Pherson, for riding a motor-cycle on the cycle path at Riccarton, was fined 10s and costs.—William M’Dowell, who did not appear to answer a charge of cycling at. night without having a light, was fined 10s and costs.—For a similar offence Edward Foster was fined the same amount. “ Tin-Kettling.” —Three lads, Horace Lawson, Frederick Workman and Henry Bowers, were charged with disturbing the inhabitants of Kilmore Street by making a noise on a kerosene tin. The lads said that they were “ tinkettling ” a newly-married couple, on the invitation of the bride’6 brother. They were convicted and discharged, after having been warned by the Magistrate, who said that the offence had been committed near a private hospital. Too Fast. —John Blease, who had ridden a motor-cycle at New Brighton at a speed dangerous to the public, was fined 10s and costs.—Dr J. C. Pairman, who wrote admitting having driven a motor-car too fast over the crossing of Colombo and Wordsworth Streets, was convicted and discharged, on the ground that he was proceeding to an urgent case.—Lawrence Wyatt Clark, who had exceeded the speed limit when going over the crossing of Colombo and Brougham Streets, was fined 10s and costs.—Nellie Clarkson, who had driven a motor-car over the same crossing at a speed exceeding six miles an hour, was fined 5s and costs.

At Large.— Harry Brewer, who had allowed a cow to wander at Spreydon, was fined 5s without costs.

Motor-car . Number.— Robert English, who had driven a motor-car without having tho registered number easily distinguishable, was fined Is without costs. Failing to Move On. — Alfred Rhodes, a cab-driver, for failing to obey the direction of a constable to move on, was convicted and ordered to pay costs. He explained that ho had driven a fare to a shop opposite the Bank of New Zealand and was waiting for the man to come out when ordered to move on. Shops and Offices Act.— William Frederick Burns, draper, of Manchester Street, was fined 40s and costs for failing to close his shop as required.— Tonks, Norton and Co., for failing to grant a holiday to an employee, were convicted. Defendants said that the employee had accompanied an auctioneer employed by the firm without the firm’s consent, and had not been paid by the firm for his work that afternoon. The man had. gone to the sale on his own initiative. The Factories Act. —Cullen’s, Limited, for failing to report an accident which occurred in its factory, was fined Is without costs. ASHBURTON. Friday, August 22. (Before Mr V. G. Day, S.M.) Exceeding Speed Limit. George Herbert 1 Carson (Mr G. H. Buchanan) pleaded not guilty to motoring at an excessive speed over a street crossing. After hearing the evidence of Constables Turner and Ingram defendant was convicted and ordered to pay costs. Unregistered Dogs.— For keeping an unregistered dog, Timothy Cronin was fined ss. . Obscene Language.— John Spring pleaded not guilty to having used obscene language within the hearing ol persons in a public place. Evidence was given by Constables Thompson and Turner, and accused was fined 40s, in default seven days’ imprisonment. _ Civil Cases.— Judgment was given for plaintiff by default with costs in the ease of A. H. Field (Mr Kennedy) v. David William Ferguson, claim £1 19s.
