EDUCATIONAL. THE EDUCATION BOARD OF THE DISTRICT OF NORTH CANTERBURY. scholarships. NOTICE is hereby given that the EXAMINATION for' the SCHOLARSHIPS offered by the Board, tenable for two years, will bo Held in Christchurch, commencing on or about the 18th November and 27th November for Senior and Junior Scholarships respectively. The value of the Scholarships will be £lO for scholars residing at homo, with the addition of necessary travelling expenses, and £3O for scholars who, in the opinion of tho Board, are obligod to Hive away from homo, owing to distance of their parents’ cr guardians’ rosidenco. I Tho Scholarships will bo offered as folj lows: I Twelve Junior Scholarships shall bo open [to all children residing within tho North Canterbury Education District, who on tho first day of December nearest tho doto of tho j examination for tho Scholarships, have been reaideut in Now Zealand for twelve months immediately preceding, and whoso age docs ■ not on ouch day as aforesaid exceed fourteen yearn. To determine the distribution of Junior Scholarships all schools will be arranged in three groups, known respectively as Group (A), Group (B), and Group (C), and the number of Scholarships awarded to each group will bo proportionate to the aggregate attendance of tho schools within tho group. Group (A) will consist of schools with a I yearly average attendance of not less than | IGI pupils. Group (B) of schools with a yearly average attendance of between 36 and ICO inclusive, and Group (C) of all .other schools. ■>. In the case of candidates entering from Private Schools the Board will requiro tho Head Teacher to furnish certificate as to tho average attendance of tho previous year, tho average attendance for the current year, and the number of adult teachers employed. Six Senior Scholarships shall bo open to all children residing within the North Canterbury Education District, who on the first day of December nearest the date of the examination for the Scholarships have been resident in Now Zealand for twelve months immediately preceding, and whose age docs not, on euch day as aforesaid, exceed sixteen years. These Senior Scholarships shall be divided into two classes, A and B, the number of Scholarships awarded to each class bring proportionate to the number of candidates who qualify in the examination. Candidates may enter for either Class A or Class B. but not for both. Candidates must enter their names on forms supplied by the Department, on or before the fifteenth day of September, in every case stating the date of birth and length of residence in New Zealand. In the case of successful candidates the Board will requiro from the principal teacher or teachers a certificate or certificates that tho provisions of Clause 3 of those regulations have boon duly observed. Tho Board reserves tbo right of requiring proof as to ago and length of residence. Tho examination shall be held at suitable centres, during the months of November or December in each year, at times and places which shall be notified beforehand. Necessary expenses of travelling, and of board and lodging, will be defrayed by tho Board, provided that claims are sent in within ono month after examination; provided further that travelling expenses, as distinguiehed from those of board and lodging, shall not be allowed in tho case of a candidate obtaining less thnn thirty-five per cent of the possible number of marks. For Junior Scholarships the subjects shall bo those prescribed for Junior Natioual Scholarships. For Senior Scholarships of Class A tho subjects shall bo the following, as set forth in tho regulations for tho Junior Civil Service examination: English. Arithmetio. Elementary Mathematics. One of tho subjects in Group 11. One of tho subjects, Greek, Latin, Fronoh or Germnn. In 1913 candidates will be allowed the option of omitting a subject from Group 11. and taking two languages from Gtoup 111. of the Junior Civil Servico programme, or, as an alternative, in tho case of candidates taking a subject in Group 11. other than. Physical Science or Homo Science, the option of taking one branch of Drawing to make up the total of 2100 marks. Note. —Candidates under this alternative are recommended to select a soienoe in addition to their scholarship subjects, in order to qualify for a Senior Free Plaoe in case of failure to secure a Scholarship. For Senior Scholarships of Class B the subjects shall bo tho following, as set forth fn the regulations for the Junior Civil Service examination: — English. Arithmetic. Elementary Mathematics, and such other subjocts (exclusive of a language) from Groups 11. or 111. as with the marks for English, Aritihmetio and Elementary Mathenjatics will make up a total of not more than 2100 marks. Candidates for Senior Scholarships of Class B shall also produce evidence of having satisfactorily oompleted during tho two years immediately preceding, a practical course of not less than two hours per week for not less than thirty weeks per year, in Woodwork, Metal-work, or Cooking and Domestic Science, and of having passed a qualifying examination in the same. In the event of a candidate seleoting Practical Agriculture from Group 11., evidence will be required of a two years’ practical oourso of not less than two hours per week, for not less than thirty weeks per year. The marks obtainable shall be those assigned for the Junior National Scholarship and Civil Servico Junior examinations respectively, providod that a scholarship shall not be awarded to any candidate who has not obtained twenty-flvo (25) per cent of tho possible number of marks in each subject, and fifty (50) por cent of the possiblo total.
