PRIZE DISTRIBUTIONS.

TECHNICAL COLLEGE DAY SCHOOL. The distribution of prises in connection with the day school at the Technical College took place yesterday, Air G. Scott, chairman of tho Board of Governors of the College, occupied tho chair, and among others present were Miss. Boys-Smith, Professor of Home Science at Cftago University, Air G. Laurenson, M.P., and Dr J. Hight. Aliss Boys-Smith briefly addressed the pupils, pointing out to them the advantages they enjoyed in being taught, not only to know things, but to do them. Air Laurenson said that he would liko to congratulate them on their director, Air Howell—(applause)—and on their teaching stnff generally. The chairman of tho Board of Governors, AD Scott, was also a burning enthusiast in working for the school. Ho was sorry that ho himself had not been born fifty years later than ho was, for there hnd never been a time so good for the young people as tho present time. Never had they had such unique chances as at the present. He believed that in the future, instead of primary education being the be-all and end-all of education, its place would be to a large extent taken Dy technical schools. The director, in his report, stated that for the first time in tho history of tho day school the accommodation had been adequate to the numbers. The erection of the domestic science wing, the new drawing office, the physical laboratory and the wool-room had at last provided the space that was so urgently required for day school classes, and as a consequence the work of tho year had been carried on under far happier circumstances. The total number on the roll for the year had been 340, as compared with 341 last year, while tho number on tho roll for the last term only had been 302, as compared with 291 for tho corresponding period last year. The great falling-off at the end of the year was thus still noticeable. • The demand for students hnd been very keen, and in some cases firms had kept places vacant until after the term examinations in order that they might secure pupils from the day school. It had been found impossible to satisfy the numerous requests that had been received. The leaving of pupils towards the end of the year was a factor that had not been sufficiently taken into account in fixing the capitation for a school of the type of the College. Under the present scale of payment it meant a considerable decreaso in revenue, while at the same time the staff had, of course, to be maintained. It was to bo hoped that representations would be made to the Department so that the loss of income arising in this way might be met by an increased grant. The tone and discipline of the school had never been better, and this was owing in chief to the influence and example of what might be termed the junior staff—the school prefects and form monitors.
