THE STAR OF CANADA.
PUMPING OPERATIONS. [Per Press Association.] GISBORNE, June 28. A trill of pumping is proceeding on board the Star of Canada. Great volumes of water f-re flowing from the scuppers. The diver, who inspected, the hull from the outside yesterday, found that the forepart of the vessel had worked fully eight feet into the papa, whoro it jested as in a cradle. lie was unable to approach closely owing to the vessol's movements and the light being bad, but ho could find no structural damage. Tho rise and fall of tlio tide inside tho vessel yesterday was three <ect as against six feet outsiue. THE CAPTAIN'S REPORT. [Per Press Association.] GISBORNE, J uric 2S. Captain Hart states that the pumping test is in every way satisfactory. Forty, minutes' pumping last night reduced the water in No. 2 hold by 2ft and in No. I by 2ft Din. One hour s pumping to-day reduced the water 4ft, and the second* hour proved tho pumps to be more than able to keep the water down. The Terawhiti's pumps have not Iveen used, that vossel being engaged laying anohors. Captain Hart states that as far as the diver could ascor--1 tain the .vessel is perfectly sound structural lyv In the engine-room an angle plate between the frame and tho tank had started, but this was not of serious consequence. There was no sign of a lenk. the engine and boiler room departments remaining quite dry. In fact if the ship was cut off at the bow the after part would float off intact. A rumour that the machinery had been i displaced wns unfounded.
