In spito of orations by Mr Bryan, it is generally accepted that the contest for the Democratic nomination was between Mr Woodrow Wilson and Mr Champ Clark. In a test roll-call Wilson polled 648 and Clark 435. A sensation was caused by Tammany Hall casting ninety New York votes in Mr Wilson's favour. Mr O. L. James, a friend of Mr Bryan's, was elected chairman of the Convention. Mr Bryan moved a, resolution opposing the nomination of any candidate representing or under obligations to ' Pierpont Morgan, Thomas, Ryan. August Belmont, or other members of privilege-hunting or favour-seeking classes. Messrs Belmont and Ryan are delegates to the Convention, and a violent scene greeted the resolution, which was carried by a large majority. The police were unable to maintain order in the crowded gnllories. The Convention adopted a platform lowering the tariff in favour of Canadian products and encouragement of United States farmers with a view to preventing emigrating Canada-wards. The Convention adjourned late at night, postponing the vote on the nomination of a presidential candidate.
