REFEREES' ASSOCIATION

The monthly meeting of the Referees' Association was held last evening. Mr H. E. Hiddlestone presided, and there was a good attendance of members. The chairman explained that owing to his being unable to obtain leave from business he could not attend the annual general meeting of the _New Zealand Referees' Association recently held at Hastings, and it was too late to make arangoments for any ono else to represent tho Association.

One new member was elected and two members resigned, owing to ill-health. The Rugby Union Committee wrote requesting referees not to allow teams to play twenty-minute spells unless in the opinon of the official the weather conditions made it necessary. The Now Zealand Rugby Union forwarded a list of recent decisions given by the International Board. A general discussion on the rules followed and several oases that bad occurred in recent matches were discussed. ' It was reported that several grounds wer not properly marked out, and tho secretary was authorised to write to the clubs. requesting that the matter should be attended to. MALVERN SUB-UNION. The Malvern sub-union commenced its competitions on Saturday, in very fine weather. A team from Springfield travelled to Kir wee and was defeated by nineteen points to nil. The visitors played two short. For Kinvee, K. M'Nae, T. Shannon (2) and E. Joseph (2) scored tries, two of which were converted bv A. Shannon. Darfield defeated Halkett at Halkett by three points to nil. A. Burrows scored a try for Darfield. ELLESMERE SUB-UNION. . The 1912 season was opened by the Ellesinoro sub-union on Saturday last. Tho weather was fine and all the grounds were in good order. In the Senior Competition, Leeston beat Dunsandel at Leeston by, eleven points to nine. Mr J. Louden was referee. In the Junior Competition, Southbridge defeated Dunsandel.
