TURCO-ITALIAN WAR.

AN UNOPPOSED LANDING

THE LOSS OF THE TEXAS. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—-Copyright. LONDON, May 5

A message from Rome says that General Ameglio, commanding the troops at Rhodes, reports that a landing was effected at Guliphor unopposed. It is reported from Smyrna that the survivors of the Texas corroborate the statement that she was sunk by shells from the forts. The Turks refused to allow the American Consul to send divers to explore the wreck.

THE OCCUPATION OF RHODES.

HOW A LANDING WAS EFFECTED (Received May 6, 9.45 p.m.) ROME, May 6.

A squadron composed of the Vittorio Emanuele, Regina Elena, Napoli and Roma left Hampalia on Friday with lights out, and proceeded at halfspeed to the Island of Charki, ten miles west of Rhodes. Another squadron followed convoying landing forces numbering 8000. All concentrated at 2 a.m., arriving at Rhodes at 3.30. A section of the fleet demonstrated before the harbour, and the other guarded the disembarkation in a bay eight miles south of the town. The Turkish troops did not appear, and the warships did not fire a shot. The Turks withdrew to a plateau five miles to the south-west, where General Ameglio immediately attacked them in order to prevent them withdrawing to the centre of the island. Several bayonet charges were made. The Italians had five wounded, and took fifty Turkish prisoners. The Turks are now on a small peninsula in the north of the island, and the warships are able to co-operate, enfilading both flanks. TURKS REPULSED. (Received May 6, 11 p.m.) ROME, May 6.
