Five barrels of powder exploded on a railway at Nancy. Five persons were fatally and four seriously injured.

Frederick Smith Pollock, a coachbuilder, was found dead hanging in an outhouse behind his office yesterday afternoon.

GISBORNE, May 6. Allen Reid was bushfelling at Waimata on a steep hillside about ten o'clock this morning, when a tawa tree on which he and a mate were engaged kicked as they were putting in a back scarf, and fell, pinning Reid to the ground. His mate extricated him with difficulty, and then went to the nearest homestead for assistance. One of tho rescuers rendered first aid, and at 10.30 a.m. they set off to carry the injured man to a waiting buggy threequarters ofamilo away. The country was £o steep that the journey was not completed till 345 p.m.-, after which Reid was driven to Gishorne Hospital, whoro lie is suffering from a broken •eg and shock.

WELLINGTON, May 6. While returning from a fire to-<lay the Fire Brigade's big motor-car camo to grief. Tho car was trying" to negotiate a street corner when the tyre of one of the front wheels came off. The car. becamo unmanageable, and crashed into a tramway pole. One fireman of the eight on the car had a collarbono broken through being thrown against tho chemical engine on top of the motor. The others were thrown off and bruised.
