SOUTHLAND HORSES IN AUSTRALIA.

[Fkoji Our. Correspondent.] INYERCARGILL, May 6. Mr A. W. Clirystall, of Lochiel, a well-known Southland exporter to tho Commonwealth of Clydesdale stock, returned to tho Bluff to-day by the Moana from Sydney. He left the dominion on March 11 with a consignment of ten horses, comprising one mare ;and nine 'colts, all of which ho exhibited at the recent P„oyal Agricultural Show in Sydney, and was successful in threo classes, obtaining first prize in three-year-oid colts, lor which there were forty entries, with Sir Coliu's Pride, a fine stamp of a colt, bred by Messrs Findlay Bros:, of Oreti. In the two-year-old colts class he carried off second honours- with Royal Fyffie, by Baron Fyffie from an Avon Chieftain mare, and it is worthy of mention that there were no fewer than eighty-one entries in this class, which speaks volumes for the quality of the Southland-bred stock. In the aged class Mr Clirystall obtained fourth, prize with Speculation, by Shepherd King, from a Lord Lyon mare. There were forty entries in this and the first prize'was twentyfive giuneas. Commenting on the show, Mr Clirys-

tall stated that it was one of the best, and the number of entries this year was considered to be a record for Sydney shows. . ! After the show the' whole of the consignment was put up for auction with the oxception of Speculation, who had been sold privately prior to the sale, the price obtained being 180 guineas. Sir Colin's Pride realised 160 guineas, and Royal Fyffie 145 guineas. With regard to the sale, Mr ChrystaH stated to a reporter that it -was a bad one. there being an absence of buyers, and this condition of affairs he attributed to the drought, which kept buyers from operating to a great extent. He mentioned that a large consignment of horses from Melboiirne was unsold and was taken back to tho Victorian capital. A New Zealand mare put up for auction by Messrs Mitchell and O'Brien realised 200 guineas, the purchaser being Mr G. Short, of the North Island, who brought her back to the dominon.
