Mr Craigie, M.P., the retiring Mayor of Timaru, was entertained on Friday night by the councillors and was presented with a group photograph of the Council. Many references were made to the progress of the borough during the ten years that Mr Craigio has held office.

j A private cablegram received in Wel- ; lington announces tho death in London jon Thursday last of Mr Joseph E. Nathan, aged 77. Deceased was an earlv settler of Wellington, a prominent merchant, and one of the founders of the Manawatu Railway Company. He had been living in London for many years. Dr Levingo left for Wellington on Saturday night. The Hon J. T. Paul arrived from Wollinfton yesterday morning. Sir George Clifford was a passenger by the Mararoa from Wellington yesterday. Mr H. Buxton, Chief Traffic Manager New Zealand Railway's, left by the Maori for Wellington on Saturday night. Messrs J. F. Andrews, H. B. Lusk, P. F. Howden, J. Murgatroyd, R. H. Lee, and Mr and Mrs C. W'. Harris were passengers by the Maori for Wellington on Saturday evening. Mr A. H. R. Amess, who has resigned from the staff of the Ashburton High School to take up an appointment as assistant instructor in agriculture for the North Canterbury Board of Education, was presented by tho staff and pupils of tho school with a suitcase, a pair of field-glasses and a silver matchbox, prior to his departure from Ashburton on Thursday last. Last Thursday evening Mr H. IS. Watson, secretary of the Tinwald Sports Club, was presented by the members with a solid silver entree dish"; and Mr E. Brittenden, assistant secretary, ,was the recipient of a pair of field-classes. A pleasant gathering was held at the rooms of Messrs Cullens, Ltd, Manchester Street, on Saturday night, when Mr G. Dickson celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his arrival in the dominion.- Mr Dickson was for many years connected with tho " Bruce Herald," Milton, and was at ono time a part proprietor of that journal. As a compositor for a number of years he was employed by tho Dunedin "Evening Star,'* and'at that time was secretary of tho Otago Typographical Association. On Saturday evening Mr S. Saunders, editor of tho "Lyttelton Times" proposed the health of Mr Dicksoii. In a brief speech he referred to Mr Dickson's long land honourable career in connection with the newspapers of the dominion, and congratulated him upon having completed fiftv years of usefulness in New Zealand. Mr W. Norrie, whose friendship with Mr Dickson has extended over many years, also spoke in complimentary terms'of the hast of tho evening. The toast was honoured enthusiastically, and Mr Dickson, in responding, gave an interesting account of his experiences in the. early days-
