FIRES.
Shortly after three o'clock yesterday morning a fire broke out in a dwelling in Hilton Street, Kaiapoi, occupied by Mr R. Pickering and owned by Mrs W. Baker. When the brigade arrived the building was enveloped in flames and only the back portion was saved. Mr Pickering lost practically the whole of his furniture, with the exception of a few articles which he had packed in a case ready to send away, as he was moving to the North Island. Tho furniture was insured in the Atlas Office for £IOO. and the building in the South British Office for £IOO. The origin of the fire is unknown. A fire occurred at Teinukaon Wednesday afternoon in the residence of Mr B. Norton. The fire started in a bedroom, but by means of a bucket brigade it was soon extinguished. A little later there was a small outbieajJ; in another room, where so.me cf tne furniture of the. bedroom had been placed. The damage done was considerable, and the owner estimates his loss at £SO.
