A message from Wanganui announces the death of Mr George Ball, an old resident. Messrs T. Laurance and; T. Woods, of London, arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning. Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P., left Christchurch for Timaru by the second express yesterday. The Rev Father Venning and Messrs G. Fenwick and D. B. Law left by the Mararoa for Wellington last night. Lieutenant H. L. L. Pennell, R.N., of Captain Scott's Antarctic expedition ship, Terra Nova, will leave for Wellington to-night, in order to interview the Minister of Marine on business connected with the vessel. The Governor is spending a holiday in Hawke's Bay. He was the guest of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club at Hastings on Thursday, and he spent yesterday shooting over Mr Taranaki To Na, s property. To-day ho will visit the Waiohiki golf links and on Sunday he will motor to the East Coast Mounted Rifles' camp at Tutira. ■ , Yesterday afternoon the scholars or the Lyttelton District High School assembled for the purpose of making a number of presentations. Mr G. Pitcaithlv, in the absence of the chairman of the school committee, occupied tho chair, and there were also present: Dr Upham, Mr J. T. Price, secretary to the committee. On behalf of the scholars of the third and fourth standards, Miss M. Sowden presented Miss L. Just, who is about to be married, with a silver candlestick, and Miss M. Cook presented her with an oak butter dish on behalf of the scholars of the fifth and sixth standards. Miss Olliver also presented lier with a cakestand and a set of Doulton ware from the teaching staff. Mr Pitcaithly, on behalf of the committee took the opportunity of presenting Miss Just with a silver tea service. In acknowledging tho gifts, Miss Just referred to the many pleasant duties she had been called upon to perform during her ten.years' service at the school. Opportunity was also taken to make a presentation to Mr E. Wells, the caretaker, who is retiring after sixteen years' service. In presenting Mr AVells with a cane chair, on behalf of the children, Mr E. U. Just, headmaster, referred to th 0 excellent manner in which Mr Wells had carried out his duties. Mr Pitcaithly stated that tho residents felt thoy could not allow the occasion to pass without recognising Mr Wells's services, and on their behalf he had pleasure in handing Mr Wells a purse of sovereigns. By the staff of the school, Mr Wells was presented with a case of pipes. Arcer Mr Wells had replied he was given three hearty cheers by the scholars.
