Tho Rugby League has adopted a definition of the " amateur " as one who receives only necessary and actual bona fido expenses. It was arranged that a New Zealand team should play New South Wales at Sydney on June 22 and 24, and visit Queensland on July 13.

SATURDAY'S MATCHES.

The competitions under the auspices of the Canterbury Rugby Union will be continued on Saturday. On the oval at Lancaster Park the hitherto unbeaten team, Sydenham, will meet Old Boys, who have a win and a draw to their credit, and as' both sides play good ope,n football an interesting gamo should result. The Merivale team, which is running level with Sydenham at present for tne D.C.L. Shield, will meet Albion on the south ground, and Christchurch will play Linwood on the west ground. At the Show Grounds Canterbury College will play Marist Brothers.

The Advertising Committ-se of the Rugby Union has had made a red flag upon which is printed in black letters the statement, '' Football at Lancaster Park to-day." It is intended to fly the flag, on the day upon which matches take place, from the flag-pole of the City Holel.

' A special goneral meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union has been called for Tuesday evening next at the Chamber of Commerce Hall, to consider proposed alterations to tho rules of play. THE ASSOCIATION GAME. The following are the grounds and referees for to-morrows ' Leaguo matches:— Sunnyside v. Burnham, at Sunnyside ; referee, Mr W. G. Bryce. Lyttelton v. Sydenham, at Lyttelton ; referee, Mr H. Holden. Nomads (white) v. Nomads (blue), at South Park; referee, Mr W. D. Ramsay. The two Young Men's Christian Association teams will plav a practice game at St Albans Park. The following team will represent tho Sydenham Fotball Club in the Association football match with the Lyttelton Club, at Lyttelton, on Saturday: —Goal. Perry; full-backs, Jennings and Forrest; half-backs, Webster, C. Campbell and Harris; forwards. Ward, Hains, Ayres, Dunederdale and Marshall. Reserve, J. Campbell.

COUNTRY FOOTBALL.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—l quite endorse the remavks oi W. Shannon, of Kirwee, regarding countrv players. If the rule were altered, I, for one, would bo pleased to come to town to play.
