BOROUGH COUNCILS.

KAIAPOI. The installation of Mr R, Wylie as Mayor of Kaiapoi took place on Wednesday evening. Councillor Brunsden and the town clerk witnessed the Mayor's declaration. The town clerk then invested the Mayor with the collar of office. The councillors congratulated the Mayor on his re-election. The Mayor briefly thanked the councillors' for their expressions of goodwill, and went on to refer to the progress of the borough during brigade station he said, had been practically completed, while a new structure on the traffic bridge had been an immense success.

• TEMUKA A. meeting of the Temuka Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening, when Colonel Hayhurst, the newly-elected Mayor, was in the chair. The 'following councillors were present: —Messrs A Frew, W. F. Evans, J. J. Ellis, C. Lashlie and H. Bell. Before proceeding with the ordinary business, tn e Deputy-Mayor, Mr A. Frew, said it was their duty as a Council to welcome their new Mayor, Colonel J. T. M. Hayhurst. 'He"was confident that the Mayor would devote a great deal of his time to the interests of the borough. The councillors endorsed the remarks of the Deputy-Mayor. The Mayor thanked tho councillors for the welcome. The Minister of Internal Affairs and the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitablo Aid Board wrote regarding a meeting of local bodies in South Canterbury, to be held inTiiiiaru on May 18, for the purpose of electing delegates to the conference on the Local Government Bill. Tho Mayor was appointed to attend, the meeting. The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote stating that the levy for the current year on contributing bodies would be £5500. The secretary of the Temuka Gas Company wrote, declining to accept liability for the cost of shifting the lamp in Godley Street. The Finance Committee's report showed the outstanding rates to be as follow: General £35 2s Id, drainage £2 8s 9d, sanitation £3 lis Id, drainage oxten-! sion £7 14s Shi, total £4B 10s Bd. The [ rents outstanding totalled £29 13s lid. The receipts during tho month amounted to £4O 2s Gd, and the bank balances were: —District fund account credit £785 13s Id, waterworks' loan, account;

credit £934 lis lOd. A motion of sympathy was passed with Councillor M'lnnes and family in their sad bereavement. A resolution was passed expressing tho sincere regret of the Council at the continued illness of Councillor Haling.
