BARMAIDS.

THE PRIVATE BAR QUESTION. [From Our Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, May 1. A statement was recently published that the registration of barmaids under the last amendment of the Licensing \ct was practically a dead letter, owine to a defect in the wording of the clause, the law providing that no female shall act as a barmaid in a publio bar unless she is registered. Ibis does not specifically apply to private bars, of which there are thousands m connection with the New Zealand hotels. The suggestion is that barmaids need not be registered if their work is only in a private bar. Inquiries here show that this is really the position, and that an amendment to tile Licensing Act will be necessary to bring the registration of barmaids into full operation. “It seems monstrous, but it is true,” said a well-known licensing authority on the prohibition side. The Government will be approached to secure an early amendment of the law.
