THE n FREE OF DEBT” FUND

A gathering of representatives of the Various Bible classes, Giristian Endeavour Societies and similar organisations of the city was hold at the Oxford Terrace Baptist Schoolroom last evening tor the purpose of inaugurating a campaign 1 to raise the sum of £ISOO, the estimated cost of the Seamen’s Institute building at present being erupted in Lyttelton by the British and • Foreign Sailors’ Society. The chair was occupied by Mr A. Kaye, president of the Christchurch branch of the Society. and addresses were delivered by tho Rev E. E. Chambers and Captain J. A. H. Marciel. The Rev E. E. Giambers spoke of the responsibility which rested upon Christchurch citizens in regard to their seaport. In the other three centres in New Zealand the port was united to the city, and therefore the welfare of seamen was better looked after. Christchurch, however, had a duty to perform in regard to 'Lyttelton, even though it was separated from the port. It was stated by other speakers that auxiliary committees were being set up in country districts to assist in the work of collecting funds. Collection cards, on which was a picture of the new institute, with the bricks numbered 1 to 50, headed “ Buy a brick. Every shilling helps,” were taken by the majority of those present. and 600 of these cards, fully subscribed to, will- defray the cost cf the Institute. It was stated during the evening that Lord. Strathcona, Canadian High Commissioner, and president of the Society, had promised to donate £IOO as soon as £I4OO bad been raised An attractive "programme of. musical and elocutionary items was contributed by members and friends of the Society, ciety.
