Mr Christie, assistant-engineer to till Sydney Harbour Board, is at present in Christchurch.

Mr H. R. Smith, town clerk, is recovering from his indisposition, and attended at tho Council Chambers for a few hours yesterday. Messrs A. D. Patterson, L. H. Dobbin, J. R. Thacker, C. J. Cooper. S. M- Park mikl A. M’Kerrow arrived from Wellington by the Maori yesterday morning. On Wednesday the permanent wharf staff of the Union Steam Ship Company presented a smoker’s companion to Mr J. S. Gill, assistant-wharfinger, who is leaving for Westport. The presentation was made by Mr J. W. Watkins, local marine superintendent, who eulogised Mr Gill’s work among the men. There was a large attendance of the members of the Old Lyttelton Navals’ Association last evening at the Lyttelton Drill Hall, when a presentation was made to Major J. S. Gill,'who is leaving for Westport. Colonel C. J. Cooper, Coast Defence Commander, occupied the chair. There were also present the Mayor (Mr M. J. Miller), Chaplain-Colonel E. Eliot Chambers, Surgeon-Captain J. Guthrie, Lieuten-ant-Colonel Joyce, Major Oakes, Captain Foster, and Lieutenants RawnV ley, Lee, Daltry and Temple. The presentation took the form of a marble clock and a silver spirit stand. Several speakers eulogised Major Gill’s past career, and wished him every success in his new labours. Major 'Gill suitably responded. Mr C. G. Beckett left for Wellington by the ferry steamer last evening. Mr IV. H. Benson, captain of the Christchurch Lacrosse Club, who has been for some weeks in the Christchurch Hospital, left the institution yesterday, in a condition auguring speedy progress towards complete recovery.

Mr J. Holwell and Miss Isa Holwel left Temuka by the first express on Wednesday for their now home in th< North Island. A large number o: friends and members of the Rualiin< Hockey Club were on the station to bic them good-bye, and cheers were giver for them as tho train steamed out.

Messrs L. W. Appleby and W. J, Moore left for Sydney by the Warrimoc yesterday. The New Zealand representatives for the Australasian boxing championships left for Sydney by the Warrimoo yesterday. Captain Strang, marino superintendent of tho Union Steam Ship Oon> pany, accompanied by Mrs Strang, passed through Lyttelton yesterday en route to the South Sea Islands. ' Sir F. L. Biss, local manager at Dunedin of tho Union Steam Ship Company, was a passenger by the Maori for the north last evening.

Tho Rev C. H. Laws was a passenger for Wellington by the Maori last evening.

Drs Fox and Maitland left for Wellington by the Maori last evening. Messrs Mark Cohen, C. Harper, P. A. Herman, H. Salmond, C. F. Binns and G. H. Hayes left hy tho Maori foi Wellingon last evening. On Tuesday evening a social gathering was held in the Springston South School for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mr and Mrs Watson and family, who are leaving tho district, After a short programme of songs and recitations, Mr Harris, chairman of the School Committee, on behalf of the residents, presented to Mr Watson a barometer and field-glass and to Mrs Watson a silver teapot, and referred to Mr and Mrs Watson’s services to tlie school and district. Advantage was taken of the occasion by the local Tennis Club to present to Miss Watson a silver cake basket. Mr M’Bean. in making the presentation, spoke 3 the loss to the Tennis Club through Miss "Watson’s departure.
