An abortive conference has been held in connection with tho Lithgow dispute. Mr Hoskins declines to dismiss the non-unionists, and the unionists refuse to consider a settlement on any other terms.

THE PAPAROA MINERS. [From Our Correspondent.] GREYMOUTH, August 24. An agreement over the dispute at the Paparoa mine was reached this afternoon. The management will now take immediate steps, with the object of resuming work at the earliest possible moment.

[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 24. This morning a conference between representatives of the master printers and newspaper proprietors of the dominion and the New Zealand Typographical Federation was commenced, Mr P. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, presiding. The object of the conference is to arrange suggestions of wages, hours and conditions of work generally for the dominion. Mr G. Fenwick (“Otago Daily Times”) presented the employers’ side of the case, and Mr R. Ferguson that of the employees. . The main point of discussion during tho day was the matter of dividing the dominion into districts for the purpose of. providing differential rates of wages throughout the' dominion. It is understood that the present rates in different districts null be maintained. A number of machinery clauses that would only affect the principal towns, were considered. However, nothing was actually decided upon. The conference will resume tomorrow.
