PERSONAL.

The Rev J. R. Clark arrived from Wellington yesterday. The Hon J. Rigg, M.L.C., is at present visiting Christchurch. The Hon C. Louisson and Mrs Louisson left for Wellington last evening. Dr J. H. Scott was a passenger by the Maori from Wellington yesterday morning. Messrs W. H. Macdougall and W. F. M. Buckley arrived from Wellington yesterday. Mr C. J. Oowen, stationmaster at Ashburton, who has been away on a holiday vacation, has returned to resume his duties. Messrs J. W. Muldoon (Wellington), W. T. Whiteley (London), and A. H. Johnston (Glenmark), arrived in Christchurch yesterday. Mr H. Norfolk, whose death occurred yesterday, had been a resident of R-angiora for about fifty years. He took no part in public affairs. Mrs F. J. Cray and Mr and Mrs & H. Black were passengers for Welling ton by the Maori last evening. Messrs A. E. Craddock, T. Mau&V G. Maude, D. T. M’lntoah, W. I. Hopkins and J. H. Hosking left foff Wellington by the Maori last evening. Thursday the children attending the Cooper’s Creek School presented to their teacher, Mr Rundle, a pair of ail* ver-mounted brushes prior to his leaving the district. Mr Rundle has been appointed to the Ladbrooks School. On Monday evening, at a meeting of the Yaldhurst School Committee, Mr AV. T. Burgess (secretary) was the recipient of a silver-mounted pocket-book and pearl-handled pocket-knife from tjio outgoing committee. Air T. Maginness (chairman), in presenting the gifts, spoke of the way in which Mr Burgess had carried out his duties, and wished the new committee every success. Mr Burgess suitably responded. A farewell social gathering was tendered by the members of the Primitive Methodist Church on Thursday evening to Mr'R. Metson, who is about to take a trip to England. Tlie chair was taken by the Rev J. Harris. The choir sang several anthems, and Mrs Metnon, Mrs AA’alker and Misses Austin, Brian and Gladys Harris also contributed to the programme. Speeches were also made in which Mr Metson was spoken of in terms of high praise. On Monday evening a card party was held in the Sheffield Hall to bid farewell to Mr F. Bull, who is about to make a trip to Great Britain. After supper, Mr 0. A. C. Hardy, M.P., on behalf of those present, handed to Mr Bull a .case of pipes, and wished him a safe voyage and speedy return. Messrs Gunn, Cunningham, Colthart and Judd also spoke of Mr Bull’s good qualities, and a pleasant time was spent with reminiscences of the early days. Songs were contributed by Messrs Colthart, Cullen and Polo.
