[From Our Correspondent.] TRENTHAM, March 6. A FINE DAY AND TALL SCORING. Trentham was in a brighter mood today. When morning broke a calm prevailed. and those who were to fire in the first squad were early astir, for it is realised at Trentlyrm that on a calm morning the men firing between eight ancl nine experience little difficulty in piling on big scores, while those who are engaged later have heat mirage and the rising breeze to contend against. By eight o’clock the rifles were cracking vigorously all over the range. Several possibles and 49’s and 48’s were soon made, and the tall scoring was not interfered with until the second section commenced firing at 9.15. Even then the weather was good, and capital scoring was the order of the day. Drummond. of Denniston, an ex-Bisley representative, and a brilliant shot, added 48 to his possible at 500yds, and won the match. Rifleman R. J. King, tho other possible scorer at 500yds, was not so fortunate, as he made but 40. missed one shot. His namesake Captain King, of the Linwood Rifles, who fired about ten o’clock, notched eight bull’s-eyes, including six consecutive centrals, and two iuners, and finished up in fifth place in the match. Duncan, of Denniston, and Patrick, of Auckland, who were first and second for the Belt at the 1909 meeting, each made 97. President Sandford, of the Christchurch Rifle Club, was the next highest Canterbury scorer with 94. Loveday, a twenty-year-old son of Rifleman George Loveday, a noted shot of many years* standing, gave another fine display, and with 48 ran almost to the head of the aggregate. SergeantMajor Evans, of the Engineers, also registered a sterling performance in dropping but one point from the maximum score. Burford, a veteran shot of the Timaru Port Guards, made 48, and a similar score was recorded by Whyte, a young marksman of the Timaru City Rifles. Lieutenant Campbell, of the same corps, made 49, a fine effort which included eight centrals. C. Craw, of the Chorlton Club, made a good showing in the match with 47, and won a prize. Two Service matches were fired on the Collins range during the day, and the first of the Service teams’ events was fired late in the afternoon on the Sommorville range. No particular interest is taken in these matches, as the conditions are so uncertain and uneven, and the scores are not disclosed during the day. The Canterbury Match, ten shots at 800 yards, was also fired during the day. Most of the leading prize-win-ners fired between eleven and twelve o’clock. Those who were engaged after lunch experienced very trying conditions, and good and bad scores were to be seen on every board. After tho possible scorers, the best performance was that of Foster, of the Timaru Port Guards, who opened with an inner and followed with nine consecutive centrals. Broad, of Geraldine, got IS. Several Canterbury marksmen notched 47. Ching, of Lyttelton, who fell away slightly in the Nelson Match, obtained 45 points in the Canterbury, and he now holds a good position in the aggregates.

To-morrow will be another serious day for those who are struggling to gain a place in the leading fifty. Two matches will be fired. Tho first, the Otago, of ten shots at 900 yards, and the second the Hawke’s Bay, of ten shots at 1000 yards. On Wednesday the last Belt match will be fired. This is the Taranaki Match, of ten shots

at 900 and 1000 yards. After this, on Thursday, the highest fifty will fire the final ten shots at 1000 yards. With, twenty shots at 900 yards and thirty at 1000 yards the marksmon have- a severe test still before them. The Service and teams’ events will be sandwiched between the Belt matches. The following are the Canterbury scores : Nelson Canterbury Match. Match. STUDHOLME MOUNTED RIFLES.
