First a cylinder was sunk to a depth of about 62ft below highwater mark, the materia] from inside having been excavated by divers. Tho pillars were then heavily laden in order ito sink them further. Afterwards they ' were filled with concrete and brickwork, each haying a load of 700 tens, causing tho pier to sini still further into tho cla^y.
