“TWO-UP.”

Eight men were charged before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., at the Magistrate’s ' Court yesterday, with having played “two-up”, outside the Canterbury Park Racecourse on December 17. The eight men. were John Marsh, Anthony Watson, James M’Mfllan, Richard Carey, Nicholas Columbus, for whom Mr Donnelly appeared, and John Heslip, William Murdoch and n . J. Mil’er. Murdoch and Miller pleaded guilty. Detective Osborne, Detective Snow and Constable Regan gave evidence stating that they had seen the men standing in a ring. Heslip and Cohimbus were stated to have been manipulating the “ kip,” and Columbus was said to have picked up money when the alarm was given. Marsh, Watson and Carey gave evidence, and stated that they had been talking near the ring, but had not taken part in the game. The charges against them were dismissed. Heslip and Columbus were each fined £5 and costs; Murdoch and Miller, in consideration of their having pleaded guilty, wore fined £5 and costs,, and J. M’Millan, who had a police list, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. A similar charge against A. Everitt was adjourned for a fortnight.
