CRICKET.

NEW ZEALAND TEACHERS’ TEAM. United Preßa Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, December 20

The New Zealand Teachers’ cricket team were passengers by the Marania, which arrived from Wellington today, and they were welcomed by Mr Beeby, Minister of Education, and the Director of Education, at the rooms of the Amateur Athletic Association. Mr Lusk, captain, replied.

HEATHCOTE-WILLI AMS SHIELD

AUCKLAND GRAMMAR SCHOOL v BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL.

Two years ago the Christchurch Boys’ High School attained the cricket premiership among secondary schools in tho dominion by winning tho Hoatheote-Wiliiams Challenge Shield, which was then presented by a Hawke’s Bay enthusiast for open competition among tho schools. Since then tho team has had to justify its retention of tho, trophy in some hardfought contests. Auckland Grammar School aspires to ownership, and last year sent down a very strong team with every prospect of success, but in an uphill game High School won rather handsomely. Less formidable opponents in Christ’s College have been more easily disposed of, but Auckland lias come down again this year, and commenced the* challenge match at Hagley Park yesterday in ideal weather ori a fast wicket.

Auckland won the toss and batted. Sutherland and Caradus making a good stand for 60. Sutherland was bowled by a short-pitched ball from Allardyce after he had been regaled for some time with well-pitched balls that were not very difficult. Jacobsen was caught at tho wickets after making 3, but Caradus and Gilmour carried on a lively partnership to 108, when Caradus was caught close ill by Miller. At the luncheon adjournment the score- was 169 for six wickets, and on resuming Aircy and Jackson continued to put oil runs, the next wicket falling at 196. The remaining wickets produced only 17, and the innings closed for 213. The School lidding was loose, but the throwing-in was good generally. Boys’ High School commenced rather badly, and two wickets were down for 15 runs; but Hickmott and Lawrence played steadily. Hickmott was bowled when ho had made 20, and Lawrence and Tattersall were associated in a long and unproductive partnership, which was broken by a change of howlers. Pratt, Auckland’s fast bowler, got Lawrence with a fast one, which ho tipped and was caught at the wickets. Tattersall played steadily for few runs in partnership with AY. -P. Guiney, who showed some inclination to open out oil what at that stago was tired bowling. Tattersall was caught in the slips, but Guiney and Miller played out time, with the score 109 for five wickets. The match will bo resumed to-day. The following are the scores:AUCKLAND GRAMMAR SOHOOL.
