FORT JERVOIS CAMP

The members of the No. 1 Company Now Zealand Garrison Artillery Territorials (Lyttelton Navals) broke up camp at Fort Jervois early; yesterday morning. On Monday evening Colonel Hawkins, V.D., accompanied by Captain Potter, visited the camp, but the heavy downpour prevented any, work ' being done. Yesterday morning a v start was made with two_ series of quick-firing six-pounder Nordenfelts, and tho shooting was highly successful. The first series was completed in 45sec, being dsec ahead of the best, previous performance. In the second effort, a new record was established for the dominion, the series being com- . pleted in 39sec. Time would not permit of more than one series being gone through with the 6in breech-loading guns at 4400yds. The shooting at this stage was also very efficient, every shot reaistering a hit, and the time recordcd = beiug 3min losee. Battle practice \ has been postponed until a future date. \ On Monday evening Captain Richardson, Dominion Artillery Instructor, gave a lecture on the tactics and strategy during the Franco-Prussian ( war. and was listened to attentively. Although the camp has not been as successful as several of its predecessors on account of the interference of the squadron, an officer stated that the work done showed that the men were as efficient and capable a lot as could bo found in tho dominion.
