LIQUOR AND LABOUR.
TO THS KniXOK. Sir,—After you published my letter (beginning of November) questioning; the accuracy of the statement made by Mr G. B. Nicholls, " that the labour and liquor interests voted together" at the recent election of the State of NewSouth Wales, I w.rot'? to the Premier (Mr M'Gowen) asking him if it was correct, and. 1 also sent my letter and " F.A.'s." I received the following reply the other day:— " Premier's Office, Sydney, Nov. 29, 1910.—Dear Sir, —I have to thank you for your letter of 17th hist., and "for the interesting newspaper extracts which accompanied it. In reply, 1 a.m pleased to be able to state that you were on sound ground in taking up "the attitude set out in your letter which, appeared in the ' Lyttelton Times' of 'Bth idem. I can speak authoritatively in regard to the recent State elections in New South Wales, and affirm that no arrangement of any kind was .in existence between the labour and liquor interests. As a matter of fact, if proof of this were needed, it is only necessary to state that a large percentage of unionists voted no-license.—Yours faithfully, Campbell Carmichael, for the Premier."
