DUNEDIN NOTES.

[From Our Correspondent.] DUNEDIN, June 15.

Among the early measures to be introduced by the Government will bo a Bill to remedy the defect in the municipal law which prevents the amalgamation of the North-East A alley borough with the city being effected. Short shrift was given by tho Education Board tc-day to a report on tho Otago District High Schools made by a special inspector (Mr Gill), and forwarded to the Board by the Department. Tho Rev F. B. Fraser said that the Board had four inspectors of its own here, who cost £2OOO a year. They were quite as capable as any special inspector to report on tho High Schools, and it was only a pretext to enable the Department to six'lid another £6OO a year. “ A waste of public money, 1 call it,” said the speaker. The report was not read. It is stated that the Hon T. Mackenzie intends residing permanently in Wellington, and that next year ho will in all probability seek election for a North Island seat.

DUNEDIN, June 16,

Mr George It. Ritchie has been appointed to the vacancy on the directorate of the Union . Steam Ship Company created by tho death of Mr A. W. Morris. A public meeting, under tlio auspices of the General Labourers’ Union, as to be hold to-morrow to consider the unemployed problem. Tho Union resolved to protest to the Prime Minister against assisted immigration and the proposal to bring youths' to this country while there is not sufficient work for tho people now here, also approving of tho Minister of Labour’s scheme to give preference to financial members of Unions.
