ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
The Council of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society mot last evening, Mr C. J. Sloman presiding. The financial statement showed that the receipts for the month had been £303 Is, including a balance brought forward of £2-19 os. The expenditure had totalled £76 7s 7d, leaving a credit balanco of £226 13s od. Accounts for £Bl IBs 5d were passed for payment. It was decided to ask tho Lands Department whether any owners of property on Lake Ellesmere had fences running beyond their boundaries. Several remits for the coming Accli-
matisation Societies’ Conference wera discussed. Mr do la Cour said that netting was still going on in Lake Ellesmere, and fish wore frequently coming into the traps with net marks on them, while the average size of tho fish was decreasing. It was decided in view of the evidence adduced by a Special Committee that a remit should be framed urging tlie abolition of netting on Lakes Ellesmere and Forsyth 1 , and the fixing of a minimum fine of £lO for any offenco. It was decided to urge that rangers should be given the same powers of entry on private land and the opening of suspicious parcels under the Animals Protection Act as under tho Fisheries Act. It was decided to recommend the Government to declare April, May and June as the shooting season, instead of May, June and July, members stating that ducks in Canterbury mated in July. It was decided to urge that stoats and weasels should no longer bo protected. Dr Moorhouse and Mr G. B. Ritchie were appointed delegates to the Acclimatisation Societies” Conference.
