BOROUGH COUNCILS.

ASHBURTON. A fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council was held on Monday evening. Tlio Mayor (Mr HDavis) reported that there was a credit balance of £258 15s 7d, and the revenue since the previous meeting had amounted to £319 14s sd. A letter was read from the Ashburton County Council in regard to the proposal to shorten tho Ashburton traffic bridge, stating that the Borough Council would be consulted before anything definite was done. The Treasury forwarded a voucher for £9 ss, fees, fines and penalties. In replv to the Council's letter, the Tinwald Town Board stated thnt it was agreeable to contribute towards the cost of the erection of a carriers' shelter shed on the terms stated. It was decided to . empower the Water Supply Committee to call for applications for tho position of cleric of works. Licenses were granted as follows: Traction engine, A. Stewart. Bras. ; public buildings, Arcade, Orange Hall; h-icknev carriages and drivers, T. H. Elliott, Accounts for £254 lis 3d were passed for payment.
