SUNDAY GOLFING.

* . 20 THE EDITOR. Sir, —7t is to bo hoped that the members of the Shirley Golf Club will treat the bombastic utterances of Councillor Walter with the contempt that they deservo. lam sure that the Sunday golfers derive as much pleasure by propelling a ball around the links as do Mr "Walter and myself by propelling our bicycles on Sunday. One would imagine, after reading Mr Walter's remarks, that the locality was turned into a bear-garden. Such is not the case. 1 have never yet put foot on the Shirley links, and, although I pass there almost every Sunday afternoon, I have never vet seen or heard anything unseemly. "What would the unfortunate ratepayers (who exhibit so much feeling on the matter) have the city-folk do on Sundays? Lounge about idly, and turn the day not into a blessing, but into a veritable curse? The pity is that more people cannot be induced to betake themselves to tho clear and bracing'atmosphere of Shirley on Sundays. If no contests are permitted on Sundays, what heinous offence is created by the golfers? l.s there any difference between enjoymn; a drive in a gig, a ride, on a bike or tram, a walk through the Domain or on the hills, and a walk around the links? Not a bit; and I have no doubt but what some of tho quibblers onjoy a walk around their poultry, gardens, etc., on Sundays. Sundays aro essentially days for enjoyment, both spiritually and physically. Those that cannot imbibe the joys of that day arc to be pitied.—l am, etc., A. HOLMES. Marshland, Juno 14.
