[From Our Cobbkspondent.] GRBYMOUTH. October 12. A practical demonstration of the Government's intentions in regard to the North Teremakau water supply is given by the purchase of MPllroy's dam on Have's Terrace. There need now 'bo no room for doubtthat tho scheme in its entirety will be carried out. The dam in question will be- used for storing water when not being - used by the parties. It i 3 tho possibility of taking tho water high onough to run into the dam that makes the present scheme so much better than the one originally surveyed. Besides there is a considerable difference in the cost of tho two schemes, the one adopted being considerably cheaper than tho other. In addition to cost it is capable of carrying; considerably more water, and that to a higher level. It i« understood that there are' already applications in lo the manager at Kumara for almost as much water as can be supplied. Several claim-holders intend making' a start io get things in order as soon as they are satisfied the water will be available when they want to use it. It is understood that the Ross Hospital Committee is considering ways and means to acquire the "Hon Roddy" nugget _of gold, with a view to offering it as a rich prize in a monster art union it is proposed to hold about Christinas time. A good record was put up by the Ross Goldfields in replacing punctured insulators on their high tension transmission line. Twenty miles of line were overhauled, and nineteen insulators which had been punctured recently by a bad lightning storm wore replaced -in a few hours. While this work was in progress the power was. of course, cut off from the mine at Boss and the pumps stopped. At first the water, as was to be exoected, rose rapidly, and when the pumps were restarted in the. afternoon it had risen to near the adit level. However, the water by midnight was down again in the shaft sufficiently to allow the men to recommenco removing the old pumping g-ear and debris, and by the following morning' it was down nine feet lower than it hn-d ever been before. This little Incident shows how

quickly a long transmission line can be overhauled and repaired and put in good working order again. It also demonstrates the power of the pumps used at Ross, when they can in n few hours pump out some eijhty feet of shaft and workings. ' DCNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE.
