KAIAPOI BAND CONTEST.
SECOND DAY. the South Island Brass Bands Association s annual contest was continued at Kaiapoi yesterday. In the. afternoon the visiting bandsmen were entertained at a garden party in the grounds of Mr Richard Evans's resi<§smce. The Mayor of Kaiapoi (Mr J. H. Blackwell) welcomed the visitors in a brief speech. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies of Kaiapoi. A selection was played by the massed bands, and individual bands also contributed items. There was a largo attendance of the public. In the evening the B flat cornet and euphonium solo competition, l ? and the quartette competition were held.
In the B flat cornet solo competition the draw was as follows:—A. 11. Boyer (Staiimore), " Old Folks at Home'" ;■ 0. E. Paterson (Elite), "Haydn."; J. Thompson (Elite), "British Grenadiers"; F. Mitchell (Kaiapoi), "Mia Fantasia " ; W. E. Knight (Kaiapoi), " Eidelweiss"; W. Taylor (Timaru Marine), "Eidelweiss"; E. Sullivan (Lyttelton Marine), "Fantasia Concertanto"; W. Whitley (Stanmoro), "My Pretty Jane." The result' was as follows:—E. Sullivan. 86 marks, 1; W. E. Knight, 82, 2; J. Thompson, 80, 3; W. Taylor, 61, 4. In the euphonium solo competition the draw was as follows:—W. Sullivan (Lyttelton Marine),' " Siugvogelcheii " ; E. A. Beck (Timaru Marine), " Weiderkehr; J. M. Stubborfiold (Elite), "Air Vane";" W. Craig (Timaru Marine), " Nordische Fantasie " ; W. Bates (Kaiapoi), "The Thorn." The result was as follows: —W. Sullivan, 89 marks, 1: J. M. Stubberfield, 86, 2; W. Craig, 82, 3; W. Bates, 80, 4; E. A. Beck, 60, 5.
In the quartet competition the draw was as follows:—Elite, " Les Huguenots"; Lyttelton Marine, " Fidelio " ; Timaru Marine B, "Town and Country"; Timaru Marine A, "Echo of Geberge"; Timaru Marine C, "Remembrance." The result was as follows: —Lyttelton Marine, 92 marks, 1; Elite, 80, 2; Timaru Marine B and Timaru Marine A, each 79, equal, 3; Timaru Marine O, 75.
Til© following are extracts from the judge's remarks upon the work of the various competitors:— B-flat Cornet Solo—No. 1 (A. H. Boyer): Faulty start; time in thenta movement erratic; generally weak in time, style and intonation. No. 2 (G. E. Paterson): Tone harsh ; playing stiff and expressionless; a solo considerably above tho abilities. No. 3 (J. Thompson): Rough playing in thema; triple-tongueing in second variation was good; points lost on slowmovements. No. 4 (F. Mitchell): A solo quite beyond the player's capability. No. o (W. E. Knight): Tasteful playing in andante movements; something to be desired in phrasing and intonation of low notes; tone peculiar, and more like a clariouette than a cornet. No. 6 (W. Taylor): Faults in tempo, phrasing and intonation; resolute movement played in robust style, but failed upon : the last note. No. 7 (E. Sullivan): Andante movement prettily played; theme artistic and musicianly in treatment; variation clearly articulated; polacca movement very neatly played. No. 8 (W. Whitley): A caricature of the solo, the performance being altogether amateurish. , , Euphonium Solo Competition.—r\o. 1 (W Sullivan): Start fair; cadenza andantino, and variation well played; polaoca movement showed fine technique; undoubtedly a clover performance. No. 2 (E. A. Beck): Playing stiff and stilted ; intonation faulty ; technique in rapid passages only amateurish. No. 3 (J. M. Stubberfield): Cadenza neatly played ; phrasing creditable ; intonation good: but tendency to too slow in tempo. No. 4 (W. Craig): A somewhat patchy performance, with many slips; stylo and expression not lacking, but intonation leaves something to be desired. No. 5 (W. Bates): Faults in tempo, but articulation clear, and treatment occasionally very discriminative; triple tongueing not correctly done. Quartette Competition. No. 1 (Elite): Balance, tempo and intonation faulty at start; moderate movement fair; allegro moderate movement neat; treatment generally praiseworthy. No. 2 (Lyttelton Marine): Good tone, balance; intonation and phrasing good. No. 3 (Timaru Marine B): Balance fair, intonation good, but players lacked precision. No. 4 (Timaru Marine A): Intonation faulty; time not all it should bo; scherzo played neatly, and fair balance in andante; lack of precision the worst feature. No. 5 (Timaru Marine C): delivery slightly rough ; balance good in places; time loose; fine finish for tune. "
