Mr E. E. Lelievre (Akaroa) is in Christchurch. Mr H. G. Ell, M.P., left for the north last evening. Messrs E. Guinness and A. Boyle left for Wellington yesterday. Sir George Clifford left for Dunedin by the second express yesterday. The Hon. O. C. Boweu and Dr Truby King went north last evening by the ferry steamer. The Wellington , Presbytery decided to nominate the Rev J. H. Mackenzie (Nelson) for the position of Moderator of the General Assembly in 1910. Messrs W. Payne and G. N. M'Lean are gazetted members of tho Kowai Domain Board, ,in place of Messrs T. M'.Naught and S. Coleman, deceased. Mr G. H. Woods, president of the New Zealand AtUetic Union, arrived by the second express yesterday, to be present at a conference with tho League 'of New Zealand Wheelmen. The Timaru Presbytery, at its meeting at Waimate yosterday, unanimously nominated the. Rev David Smith, D.D., Blairgowrie, for the vacant chair in Knox College, Dunedin. •

A number of delegates to tho Baptist Conference, to be held in Wellington, passod through Christchurch last evening, on their way north, and were joined bv local delegates, including the Rev R, S. Gray.

The Rev W. E. Lambert and Messrs C. F. Hopkins and R. .H. Loy, representatives,, of the Ashburton Baptist Church, left for Wellington yesterday, to attend the New Zealand Baptist Union Conference, which will be opened to-dav.

Mr S. Ross, of Overdale, Rakaia, who recently sold his farm, and is about to remove to Southland, was entertained, by friends on Thursday evening, over 150 persons being present. Mr John Lambio ('chairman of tho AshburtonCounty Council) presided, and presents ed Air Ross with a roller-top writing cabinet, and Mrs Ross with a silver salver and silver tea service.

Air S. Fanning, who recently retired from the railway service on superannuation, was the recipient of a presentation on Monday evening from his friends and fellow-officers of tho Christchurch Goods Department. Mr Cole, goods agent, referred to Mr Fanning's service, extending over some thirtyfivo years, and expressed a hope that he might live long to enjoy his respite from work. Ho then presented Mr Fanning with a gold sovereign-cafie, suitably inscribed, and a pipe.
