COUNTY COUNCILS.
CHEVIOT. A monthly meeting of the Cheviot County Council was held on Saturday; present—Messrs T. Stevenson (chairman), T. Gee, T. Meikle, W. Hodgson ! and A. W. Rutherford. At the request of tho Cheviot branch of the South Island Main Trunk Railway League, it was decided to call a public meeting in tho Town Hall at 2.30 on tho following Saturday, to arrange 'a ceremony at the starting of the' Waiau Bridge. A letter was received from the resident engineer of tho Public Works Department, stating that a voucher for £126 in respect to repairs for the Domett Road had been certifiod to and forwarded for payment. The Under-Secretary for Public Works sent notice that Mi- H. W. Bishop, S.M., had been appointed commissioner to hold an inquiry in regard to control and maintenance of tho Hurunui Bridge. It was resolved that the chairman and the clerk should represent the Council, Mr Meikle asking to bo relieved from the duty. Mr G. M. Fraser, contractor for the Waiau Bridge, wrote protesting against the Council's heavy traffic by-laws. The letter was received, and the clerk was instructed to enforce tho by-laws. Mr A. W. Rutherford was appointed delegate- to the Counties' Association Conference. The Treasury' Department forwarded notice of the payment of £125, the balance of the subsidy on rates. It was resolved to petition tho Government through Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P., for a grant of £SOO for improving Hawkswood and Conway Roads. The action of the chairman in authorising the sale of certain material at tho Port Robinson sheds was confirmed. It was decided to call for tenders for an engine and a boiler at Port Robinson. It was resolved to grade and widen Elif.abeth Road. The price for small birds' eggs was fixed at 2d per dozen and for heads at 4d per dozen. A grant of £2O to the Mackenzie Town Board was passed, and accounts for £257 3s Id were passed for payment.
