CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

A monthly meeting of the Council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held on Monday afternoon, the president. Mr F. Al. Warren, in the chair.

A resolution passed at the annual meeting, recommending that the Chamber should take action with other representative bodies with regard to the better handling of passengers' luggage, was considered, and it was agreed that considerable improvement had been effected through the arrangements recently made by the Government for li'.Hga-ffo between steamer and train at Wellington.

The report of the committee appointed to consider the question of establishing a scholarship by the Chamber, which was to the. effect that it could not recommend the Chamber to adopt the proposal, in view of the state of the- finances, was adopted. The Railways Sectional Committee reported that it had written to the Minister ol Railways, urging him to reconsider his decision not to adopt popular fares for week-end journeys. The sub-committee appointed to arrange, for the entertainment of the visit of the ..Imperial Commercial Congress delegates presented its report, which was adopted. The London Chamber of Commerce forwarded resolutions on the subject of naval and military defence, and it was decided to reply that it was considered that the ground covered by the resolutions was dealt with by the recent Defence Conference. The London Corn Trade Association wrote. stating that the standard samples of grain fixed by the. Chamber had been .adooted.
